It is the last decade of the 19th century. The world is a wondrous place. Technology and human ingenuity are advancing faster and farther than ever before.

And yet there are signs of unease. Unexplained deaths. Serial killers. Horrendous happenings. The modern world has met the savage Otherworld of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and things are not what they seem. Or what they should be.

In order to investigate these events, Her Majesty’s Government has created the Department for Investigation of Inexplicable Phenomena. A secret branch of the Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard, it comprises of civillian volunteers, giving the “Met” access to ingenious and inquisitive minds it would not normally have access to.
